What makes Slovenia the ultimate hiking spot is its location. Nestled right where the Alps meet the Dinarides. No wonder hiking is probably the most popular activity in Slovenia. In the heart of the Julian Alps there’s a special mountain – our national symbol. Triglav! The surrounding land is a protected area – Triglav National Park. There’s no better way to get-familiar with hiking in Slovenia than the one at the Triglav national Park.

On a week-long hiking trip you’ll visit some of the most prominent Slovenian hiking spots. We’ve selected spots which are rather easy to access, not technical – yet rewarding. All you need is the will, the power and energy to walk a few hours a day – for a few days in a row. We’ll take you to altitudes around 2.000 m above sea level, where you can still breathe normally while enjoying that great feeling of being in the mountains.

DAY 01

Bohinj to Zajamniki and Pokljuka 3-4 h

DAY 02

From Pokljuka to Debela pec 5-6 hours

It’s time to head towards the proper mountain peaks of the Julian Alps. Still very accessible and safe, yet scenic once you get to the top. We’ll reach the altitude just over 2000m above sea level. We’ll pass-by a mountain hut called Blejska koca at Lipanca – the perfect spot to have a snack and drink, either from your backpack or from the hut.

As we slowly leave the forest behind, we walk through the bushes, the grass and rocks, for an additional 1-2 hours. Once on top of the mountain we’ll be rewarded by a 360⁰ view of the Julian Alps and Karavanke. The Slovenian “holy” mountain Triglav will seem at your fingertips!

We return down to Pokljuka using the same route with a wonderful dinner waiting for us at the hotel once again.

DAY 03

Approaching Triglav (Vodnikova hut) 6-7 hours

DistanceDistance: 59,1 km
DistanceElevation: 61 m

Let’s take advantage of being at the foothills of the Alps on Pokljuka, making another trip from there, before we return to Bohinj.

We’ll depart from the hotel early in the morning and head towards the Vodnikova hut. Along the way we’ll meet quite a few people as we head to Triglav, as the Vodnikova hut is located on the way. Our plan for the day is certainly not as aggressive. After some refreshment in the hut we continue our journey towards Triglav, but then turn left at Konjsko sedlo, descent down to Velo polje and then loop back to the original path that we used previously to get there.

Another overnight stay at Pokljuka.

DAY 04

Rest day in Bohinj

Let’s get back to Bohinj after breakfast. We think it’s time for a rest – after three days of hiking. And Bohinj is the right place to do it! Passively or actively. There are all sorts of possibilities. Chilling out by the lake beach, rowing on the lake, cycling or simply walking around the lake.

Also, Lake Bled is just 25 km away. We can arrange a trip if that’s what you’d like.

DAY 05

Triglav Lakes Lodge – a classic of Slovenian hiking 6-7 hours

Hiking from Bohinj to Triglav Lakes Lodge is a classic route of Slovenian hiking and mountaineering. Not too tough. Not too easy yet very diverse and rewarding. It takes you to places where you really feel you’re truly in the mountains. But, again, accessible even if you’re not very skilled. All it takes is a little persistence and strength to walk a few hours.

The end point is the hut, near the lake. When returning we’ll take an alternative route to make the trip slightly more diverse. If there’s still a lot of energy within the group the group, we’ll make an additional detour to reach the top of another 2000 m high mountain called Ticarica.

DAY 06

From Vogel ski resort to Komna 5 hours

We start the hike with a little bit of help – a cable car. This takes us up to the Vogel ski resort, 1533 m above sea level. And the destination for the day, Komna hut, is pretty much at the same altitude! There’s going to be a few ups and downs in between, but it really only requires a little endurance to walk for 5 hours.

Komna is a typical Slovenian mountain hut.  Although there are some single bedrooms, most of the hikers stay in large shared rooms. We can either stay overnight and return down to Bohinj the next morning, or, alternatively if you’ve still got some power, return to Bohinj the same day when arriving from Vogel. It’s just a 2-hour walk.

The group needs to make a decision when booking the tour!

DAY 07

Bohinj

If you decided to stay overnight in Komna the day before, the only goal for this day is to make the descent to Bohinj. It shouldn’t take us more than 2 hours and can easily make it before lunchtime. On the way down to the valley we’ll stop at the Savica waterfall – a gem among the many waterfalls in Slovenia.

If you already returned from Komna to Bohinj yesterday, we can have another morning of easy hiking today to Mostnica, an Alpine river with gorges and waterfalls, not far out from Bohinj.
