This tour is without a doubt one of Europe’s most diverse and scenic cycling tours designed for the average cyclist. The trip reveals beautiful nature and presents the history through the medieval monuments. One might find cycling the winding roads between the Alps and Adriatic a considerable effort, but it is actually far easier than it seems.

While the original Alpe Adria tour runs across Austria and Italy, we have decided to enrich the experience by adding the astonishing Soča Valley to the itinerary, making a detour from Udine to Slovenia. A fusion of diverse landscape, lush green nature, and the beautiful atmosphere intertwined by a mist of the rich history, is what makes this journey special. Not to mention the exciting tracks, that winds from the Alps, through the indulging Slovenian Karst, the wine growing region of Goriška Brda, descending to the shining Adriatic Coast. Moreover, the culinary lovers will not be disappointed. From the first snack to the last glass of wine this will be quite an experience.

HIGHLIGHTS: Tarvisio, Cathedral of Sant’Andrea (Venzone), Piazza della Libertà (Udine), Kobarid, Goriška Brda, Karst, Piran

DAY 01

DistanceDistance: 64,2 km
DistanceElevation: 320 m

The tour starts in Tarvisio, an Italian city close to the border of two neighboring countries, Slovenia and Austria. Visiting either or both of these countries a day before the tour starts is also an option. In the stretch from Tarvisio to Venzone, also the longest section of the tour, we follow the fascinating track from the mountains to the sea, passing through the most beautiful places in the region. This cycling track winds between bridges and tunnels until you reach the city of Dogna. Once you leave this city, a little more attention is needed as you’ll share sections with regular traffic. At the end of the cycling day, we reach the charming city of Venzone, surrounded by imposing medieval walls and dotted with many historical monuments, such as the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea and the mysterious and ancient Chapel of San Michele, home of the historic mummies.

DAY 02

DistanceDistance: 55,5 km
DistanceElevation: 120 m

Today’s cycling leisurely continues to explore the charms of Italy from the seat of your bike. We leave the mountains behind for a while, gently losing altitude, which gives you more time to focus on the surroundings. As you get further south the major interest is in the towns and villages you pass through. Our stop for the day is in Udine, the capital city of Friuli, a sub-region of the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia-Giulia. While there, make sure to visit Udine’s Piazza della Libertà, one of Italy’s most elegant city piazzas.

DAY 03

Udine - Kobarid

DistanceDistance: 51,5 km
DistanceElevation: 230 m

This is the day we leave the original Alpe Adria track, and head west towards the refreshing Soča Valley in Slovenia. Following the tracks by the sparkling Soča River, taking in the beautiful nature and fresh air will give you strength to keep up the spirit for all yet to come. We cross from Italy to Slovenia to find ourselves in Kobarid, a charming little town, famous for the WWI museum, devoted almost entirely to the Soča Front and the ‘war to end all wars’. Definitely worth a visit!

DAY 04

Kobarid - Šmartno (Goriška Brda)

DistanceDistance: 50,95 km
DistanceElevation: 610 m

Today’s cycling will be a bit more challenging as we rack up around 600 m of elevation throughout the day, but not any less attractive. After exploring some more of the Soča Valley, chasing the turquoise river from the seat of your bike, we will cycle into the Goriška Brda.  Met by the dazzling vineyard region, it spreads its magic around the hills dotted with stone houses and dreamy sunrises. The area has been voted as one of the 10 most elite travel destinations for wine lovers and it is our stay for the night.

DAY 05

Šmartno - Komen

DistanceDistance: 54,1 km
DistanceElevation: 530 m

Every country settled between the Alps and the sparkling sea seem to have its own version of Tuscany. In Slovenia we call it Karst. Olive trees, vineyards, surrounding green hills, zigzagged with plenty of winding roads it makes a perfect day for cycling. Karst is all about indulgement and one cannot go by without having some proper Karst ham (prosciutto) tasting, with a delicious glass of local wine.

Taking a break from pedaling, we spend the night in Komen. In the pleasant atmosphere of the farmhouse, the owner will present Slovenian Karst at its best, with a serving of classic local food and wine.

DAY 06

Komen - Trieste (alternatively Rodik)

DistanceDistance: 44,3 km
DistanceElevation: 510 m

Today is totally dedicated to exploring the charming Karst region. You will chase the winding roads between the vineyards and olive trees, and be amazed by the small stone villages sitting on the surrounding hills. The friendliness of the locals will encourage you to stop in a local restaurant or farmhouse having a quick taste of Karst ham or a glass of local wine. Leaving Slovenia, the route leads us back to Italy, ending our day in Trieste.

DAY 07

DistanceDistance: 47,6 km
DistanceElevation: 406 m

After having a breakfast in Trieste, we take a leisure ride to Piran, the most charming and picturesque coastal town in Slovenia. This time, we will arrive to Piran early enough to have an espresso at the Giuseppe Tartini piazza, waving goodbye to the Adriatic and bid farewell, until our next visit.

Piran is also a great starting point for our other tour, named the Parenzana tour, designed for two different types of cyclist: Easy and Prolonged Parenzana. This is a great option if you would like to extend your 6 day Alpe Adria tour. The path leads you across the Croatian Istria, leisurely following the tracks inland to the coastal resort of Poreč, easily accessible from Piran.
