Elba Island Mountainbike Tour in Italy
Description
The MTB Elba tour offers a biking experience on the largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago, which is just 27 kilometres long, yet rises almost 1,000 metres above the Tyrrhenian Sea. Full days of fun on the trails, combined with the Mediterranean climate and cuisine, make it one of the most distinctive Italy mountain bike tours. Once known for its mines, Elba now offers excellent tourism infrastructure – including for cyclists – while its hilly, sparsely populated interior provides exceptional mountain biking in Italy.
During this mountain bike tour in Italy, you will ride the trails of Monte Calamita and Capoliveri Bike Park, explore abandoned mines and the striking Red Lake, and enjoy the island views. The routes also pass vineyards, olive groves, Napoleon’s summer residence and beaches ranging from the black sands of Cannello to the famous white beach of Capo Bianco, adding even more variety to mountain biking in Tuscany.
But there is more: a pleasant Mediterranean climate outside the peak season, consistently excellent Italian food and stages that bring you close to the beach almost every day. Unlike many point-to-point Italy mountain bike tours, we will stay in the same bike hotel on Elba throughout the tour, using it as a base for exploring every corner of the island. That means your suitcase can remain unpacked, and you can take a rest day whenever you feel you need one during your active holiday in Italy.
As with other demanding mountain bike tours, it should be noted that, although the daily itineraries can be adjusted to suit the group and weather conditions, this MTB Elba tour is not suitable for riders without previous mountain biking experience. Led by our experienced guide and an excellent cycling expert, the tour includes some challenging climbs and technical descents on singletrack trails.
Dear MTB friend, see you on Elba!

Itinerary
ARRIVAL ON ELBA ISLAND, ITALY
Your Elba mountain bike adventure starts with a ferry ride from Piombino to the beautiful island of Elba, the largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago and once home to Napoleon during his exile. The island offers some of the most distinctive mountain biking in Tuscany.
After a van transfer to your accommodation for the week, you can enjoy your first impressions of the island. Depending on your arrival time, you can take a stroll along the coast, explore a nearby village or simply relax at the beach.
FALL IN LOVE WITH THE ISLAND
The first stage explores the Elba MTB trails around Monte Calamita (‘calamita’ means magnet) and includes a climb to the top on an extremely steep concrete and macadam road. An easier but less scenic wooded trail is available as an alternative. From the top, you can enjoy views over half of Elba and, on a clear day, as far as the islands of Pianosa, Montecristo and Giglio, and even Corsica.
The route then descends to the seaside village of Innamorata, whose name means “in love,” before continuing along the famous Cactus Trail, descending to the abandoned Vallone mine and following the black beach of Cannello to the mining museum. This biking day is a strong introduction to some of the best mountain biking in Italy.
6 KILOMETERS OF MTB PARADISE
We will start pedalling towards Monte Calamita again, this time following a different and slightly easier route, before continuing from where we finished the previous day. We will ride to Capoliveri Bike Park, which offers several variations of short trails. With descents of varying difficulty, the park is ideal for honing your mountain biking technique.
After the “mini MTB school,” we will enjoy a romantic ride past horse farms, vineyards, a winery and tennis courts before reaching the abandoned Ginevro mine. From there, we can choose between a more challenging and an easier descent.
To finish the day, a heavenly six-kilometre trail leads us back to Capoliveri, completing another memorable day of mountain biking in Tuscany and showing why this tour stands out among Italy mountain bike tours.
BETWEEN THE LAKE AND THE OCEAN
On this stage of the MTB Elba tour, we start in Porto Azzurro, near the island’s still-active prison, and ride past bays and campsites. The route then follows a narrow strip of land between Lake Terranera on one side and the Tyrrhenian Sea on the other, before reaching the Monte Arco botanical garden.
After an optional descent to Ortano, whose final section is quite technical, the route continues across two mountain ridges, mostly on well-paved ground. From the highest point, you can enjoy views of Porto Azzurro and Capoliveri.
The day ends with another pleasant descent and a ride through vineyards and olive groves – perhaps past some of the ingredients that will appear on your dinner plate during your active holiday in Italy.
THE NORTHERNMOST POINT OF THE ISLAND
To reach the starting point in the village of Rio nel Elba during our MTB Elba tour, a 15-kilometer van transfer is required. From there, we will cycle to the Red Lake (Lagheto della Conche), which was formed by former mining activity in the Rio Marina area.
From the lake, a combination of beautiful gravel roads and trails leads towards Capo della Vita, the northernmost point of the island, and nearby Cavo, where the Grande Traversata Elbana (GTE) begins. This long-distance hiking route can also be partly explored by bike. Along the way, we will see the Tonietti Mausoleum, built for the powerful Tonietti mining family.
MORE EPIC RIDES
Do you mind if we return to the southern part of the island once more on our MTB Elba tour? We promise it’s worth it. This time we will explore the western Elba MTB trails, with options of varying difficulty.
We will also visit the picturesque Forte Focardo, which rises above the sea on the island’s eastern coast and is a not-to-be-missed coastal highlight on Italy mountain bike tours.
NAPOLEON'S SUMMER RESIDENCE
We saved a slightly easier stage, with a little more asphalt, for the final day of this MTB Elba tour – but it will be worth it. Our first highlight is the famous white beach of Capo Bianco, which appears in many of Elba’s promotional materials.
After a break in the seaside village of Procchio, we will ride along an ancient paved road over Monte San Martino before enjoying an idyllic green descent to Napoleon’s summer residence. The building itself may not be especially impressive – today’s leaders probably have far more luxurious residences – but the location itself is wonderful.
CIAO, ELBA ISLAND, ITALY
The tour officially ends after breakfast with the ferry transfer back to the mainland. Alternatively, you can leave the island using your own transport or extend one of the most distinctive Italy mountain bike tours with a few relaxing recovery days.

Logistics
The Elba Island Mountain Bike Tour in Italy begins and ends in Piombino, with a return ferry crossing from Piombino to the island of Elba. One ferry ride is planned on this day. Guests will receive the meeting point, together with the departure time, in the tour materials, which are sent 2–3 weeks before the tour begins.
GETTING THERE
The nearest airport is Pisa (PSA), about 1–1.5 hours by train (Pisa Centrale → Piombino Marittima, direct or via Campiglia Marittima) to the ferry port. Florence and Rome airports are also well connected, at roughly 2.5–3 hours and 3–3.5 hours by train respectively. Elba’s own small airport at Marina di Campo also has seasonal flights, mainly from Northern Italy.
Guests arriving by car can leave their vehicle at a public car park in Piombino for the duration of the tour. Bringing your car onto the ferry to Elba is also an option – in that case, the vehicle ferry crossing is self-arranged and paid for by the guest.

This itinerary uses a single base for the whole week. Out from and back to the same hotel each night means no daily packing.
