Bike Slovenia green map tour

The Bike Slovenia Green is a 6 day biking tour connecting destinations that have obtained Slovenia Green certificate. Destinations receive this certificate when they show sufficient efforts directed towards the sustainable development.

This very diverse biking tour combines the landscapes of the Julian Alps and those of the Mediterranean in only 6 days. It starts in Kranjska Gora and runs by the famous Lake Bled after passing through one of the most beautiful alpine valleys of Radovna and by yet another alpine pearl, Lake Bohinj, and crossing the Pokljuka plateau with its dense forests and mountain pastures. From Bohinj the train will take you via one of the most scenic railways to Most na Soči and cycling continues along the Soča river, which has a distinct emerald green colour and is considered to be one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe. The Soča Valley was the first destination in Slovenia to earn the title of the European Destination of Excellence (EDEN) due to its sustainable development in tourism.

After Soča Valley, the tour leaves the mountains and enters the land of gentle, rolling hills covered in orchards and vineyards and dotted with small, secluded villages – the region of Goriška Brda reminds of Tuscany. The wine growers of Goriška Brda are famous around the world for their high quality wine, and any wine connoisseur would recognise many of the names displayed along the road winding through the landscape. Wine tasting is obviously inevitable here.

Did you know that the noble white Lipizzaner horses originate from Slovenia? The original stud farm has been set in Lipica, in the Karst region, since 1580. This is where the tour makes a stop after passing most of the Karst region and before descending towards the town of Koper, a small slice of Venice in Slovenia. The mission of the last day is to explore Istria on bike, following the abandoned Parenzana railway track, which offers the most stunning sceneries.

Itinerary

DAY 01

Arrival to Kranjska Gora

The Bike Slovenia Green cycling tour starts with an overnight in the beautiful alpine village resort of Kranjska Gora situated at the foot of the Julian Alps.

DAY 02

Meet famous Bled

DistanceDistance: 37,2 km
DistanceElevation: 260 m

From Kranjska gora, a pleasant cycling road leads to another alpine village of Mojstrana, where the tour enters what is arguably one of the most beautiful alpine valleys in Slovenia, the Radovna river valley.

Since the area is part of the Triglav National Park, mass tourism is partially limited here. The valley is very popular due to its beautiful unspoiled nature, with one of the most imposing parts being the 1.6 kilometres long Vintgar gorge. Reaching the final destination of the day, it would be a pity not to visit the famous island in the middle of Lake Bled, featuring a church, or taste the famous Bled cake.

DAY 03

From Bled to Bohinj Lake

DistanceDistance: 40 - 49,4 km
DistanceElevation: 600 - 1050 m

The second day the tour includes a climb to the Pokljuka plateau, which overlooks both lakes. Located in the Triglav National Park, the Pokljuka plateau measures some 20 km in length and almost the same in width, resting at an altitude of 1300 m.The plateau serves as a starting point to many hikes, and numerous old bear migration routeslead through the forests and over the plateau that is dotted with hidden shafts, sinkholes and small valleys. Shingle-covered wooden cottagesare typical of the Slovenian mountain pastures. Back in the old days, they were used as homes for shepherdsand as dairy production facilities.

Thehighlightof the day is the Zajamnikimountain pasturein the central area of Pokljuka, with its beautiful cottages and a perfect view over Lake Bohinj. In wintertime, Pokljuka serves as one of the world’s best biathlon centres.

Using mostly asphalt and some forest roads, the tour reaches Bohinj, the final destination of the day. Many visitors to Slovenia say they have never seen a lake more beautiful than Bled – until they see Lake Bohinj, the largest natural lake in Slovenia, which is located in a glacial valley just 26 km southwest from Bled.

Transfer upon request is possible from Bled to Pokljuka Plateau if 1.050 elevation meters sounds too challenging.

In case of transfer you cycle 40km, 250 elevation m.

DAY 04

Emerald Soča Valley

DistanceDistance: 36 km
DistanceElevation: 450 m

One of the most beautiful views of the lake opens from the railway station located just above it, where the tour takes a train again to travel from the heart of the Alps to the warm Mediterranean area of the Central Soča valley. The Bohinj railway, which connects Jesenice in Slovenia with Trieste in Italy, was built from 1900 to 1906, during the Austria-Hungary era, as part of a then new strategic railway called Neue Alpenbahnen, to connect the western part of Austria as well as that of the southern Germany with the then Austro-Hungarian port of Trieste. The scenic ride, which features numerous views of gorgesand plains, runs through multiple tunnels, the longest one being over 6 kilometres long.

The tour disembarks the train in Most na Soči. The Soča, which has a distinct emerald greencolour and is considered one of themost beautiful riversin Europe, is at its most beautiful in the gorge below the town. The Soča valley is the first destination in Slovenia to earn the title of the European Destination of Excellence(EDEN), due to its sustainable development in tourism. The responsible approach is also reflected in the cycling trail arranged along the river and the railway routed along the accumulation lake and running all the way to the Solkan bridge, which offers a view of Mt Sveta Gora. The tour passes the old railroad bridge featuring the largest stone arch in the world.

Passing through the town of Solkan, the Soča flows towards Italy, leaving behind the Alps and the Pre-Alpine world. Just like the Soča, the trail here leaves Slovenia only to enter it once again at the city of Gorizia, having briefly entered Italy turning towards Collio and finally towards the Goriška Brda region.

Goriška brda/Collio is a single landscape divided between two countries, a land of gentle, rolling hills covered in orchards and vineyards and dotted with small, secluded villages reminding of Tuscany. The wine growers here are famous across the world for their high quality wine and hospitality. Needless to say, wine tasting is inevitable here and as far as food is concerned – well, the area is very close to Italy, which says it all. The village of Šmartno, the final destination of the day, is home to some of the most prominent wine growers.

DAY 05

Karst and horses – from Brda to Komen

DistanceDistance: 38 km
DistanceElevation: 510 m

Did you know that Slovenia is literally the land of karst? It was the Slovenian Karst that lent the name to the karst landscapes and phenomena all over the world, for it was here that scientists were first able to explain the numerous karst features. Speleologists discover new caves in Slovenia every year, and the number of recorded ones now amounts to more than 8,000. However, only about 20 of them are show caves.

Besides that, the Slovenian Karst is the wine-growing region, which was praised even by the ancient Greeks and Romans. The Karst Wine Route boasts more than 100 wine cellars, where visitors can taste and explore the wealth of Karst wines. Although the landscape is different here, it is again full of vineyards and small ancient villages situated on the hill tops and featuring the traditional houses built in stone. The day ends in small, typical Karst town Komen, which is known by beautiful wineries.

DAY 06

Karst stage (Komen – Lokev)

DistanceDistance: 37 km
DistanceElevation: 420 m

The stage will cover most of Slovenia Karst and will follow across small Karst villages and town. During the day the tour will pass Lipica Stud Farm. Did you know that the noble white Lipizzaner horses originate from Slovenia? Their original stud farm has been located in Lipica, in the Karst region, since 1580. At the end of the day, the group can visit UNESCO site Škocjan Caves or can visit one of the Karst wineries where typical wine Teran can be tasted.

DAY 07

Changing the pace – from Lokev to Koper

DistanceDistance: 57,6 km
DistanceElevation: 435 m

Day truly wraps up the diversity of this small country and of the tour itself. The route first overlooks the Gulf of Trieste, offering some spectacular views. A scenic ride along the Adriatic coast is characterized by rich sub-continental Istrian karstic vegetation. Soon after Muggia the route follows the Parenzana railway track, a now defunct narrow gauge railway that was in operation from 1902 to 1935 and used to connect Trieste and Poreč. Following the trail and passing through some tunnels on the way, the tour finally reaches the city of Piran, which, according to Lonely Planet, is a small slice of Venice in Slovenia, sitting pretty at the tip of a narrow peninsula, on the Slovenian coast. Its Old Town, which is one of the best-preserved historical towns anywhere on the Adriatic, is a gem of the Venetian Gothic architecture. The biking tour ens in Koper, the capital of Slovenian coast. Make sure you do not leave without trying the delicious seafood and taking a dip in the sea.
